Classic leather dog collars by Maul Ledermanufaktur

Discover classic leather dog collars by Maul Ledermanufaktur at Don Lorino. This collection brings together handcrafted dog collars made from carefully selected leather for those who appreciate timeless design, considered details and excellent comfort.

Choose from clean, understated designs and exclusive collars featuring decorative stitching, studs and other details. The range includes several colours, widths and lengths for dogs of different sizes and proportions.

Maul’s classic leather collars are handcrafted in Worpswede, Germany. Materials, linings, reinforcements and fittings vary between designs, allowing you to choose a collar according to both your dog’s needs and your personal style.

Leather dog collars with timeless design

A classic leather dog collar is a timeless choice for both everyday walks and special occasions. Its flat construction gives it a traditional appearance and allows different widths, colours and decorative details to be combined.

The collection includes classic leather shades such as black, cognac and dark brown, as well as more contemporary and expressive colours. Some collars have a clean, understated design, while others feature contrast stitching, decorative studs or distinctive metal fittings.

As leather is a natural material, slight variations in colour and texture may occur. With the right care, the leather can age beautifully and develop its own distinctive patina over time.

Handcrafted dog collars by Maul

Maul Ledermanufaktur has been making leather products for dogs since 1975. The collars are handcrafted in Worpswede in northern Germany with a focus on traditional leather craftsmanship, comfort and durable construction.

Several designs have an integrated textile or nylon reinforcement that provides stability and helps the collar retain its shape with regular use. The exact construction varies between products and is specified on each product page.

The type of leather and fittings also varies. The collection includes collars made from nappa leather, nubuck, suede and heavier ox leather. Depending on the design and colourway, the fittings may be made from solid brass or have a silver-coloured finish.

Soft leather and comfortable lining

Many of Maul’s classic collars are designed with a particular focus on comfort. Designs with a soft leather lining provide a comfortable surface against the dog’s coat and skin, while rounded or carefully finished edges can help reduce chafing.

The lining may, for example, be made from soft nappa leather. Some designs are more robust and structured, while others have a softer, more supple construction. Check the product description if your dog has sensitive skin or if you are looking for a particular type of lining.

Even a soft collar must fit correctly. A collar that is too tight, too loose or twists excessively can cause discomfort regardless of the material.

Klassik Comfort – everyday comfort

Klassik Comfort is a classic leather collar designed to combine a sturdy construction with a comfortable feel around the dog’s neck. It is an ideal choice if you are looking for a timeless collar for regular use.

The classic shape is easy to pair with a matching leather lead. Check the available colours, widths and current size range on the product page before ordering.

Klassik Exklusiv – classic leather with decorative details

Klassik Exklusiv combines high-quality ox leather with decorative studs and contrast stitching. The collar has integrated nylon reinforcement for stability and to help it retain its shape.

The design is available in several colourways and with different metal finishes depending on the version. It is an excellent choice if you are looking for a robust leather collar with a more decorative yet still timeless appearance.

Klassik Premium and Premium Soft

Designs in the Klassik Premium range combine a classic shape with carefully selected materials and beautifully finished details. The collection also includes softer versions such as Klassik Premium Soft.

The Premium designs are available in different materials, colours and constructions. Check the individual product page for details about the leather, lining, reinforcement and fittings.

Klassik Premium Suede

Klassik Premium Suede has a soft, matt surface that gives the collar an exclusive and slightly more relaxed appearance. The texture of suede brings out the colour differently from smooth nappa leather and is ideal if you prefer a softer visual impression.

Suede is more sensitive to moisture and dirt than some smooth leathers. The collar should therefore be cleaned gently and allowed to dry naturally if it becomes damp.

Klassik Soft and Klassik Soft Exklusiv

Klassik Soft is designed for those seeking a classic collar with a soft and comfortable feel. The range includes both understated designs and more decorative versions.

Klassik Soft Exklusiv combines the soft construction with details that give the collar a more distinctive appearance. Exact materials and features may vary between colourways.

Classic leather collars for small dogs

The collection also includes finer designs for smaller dogs. Mini Klassik and Mini Klassik Soft have proportions that are better suited to small necks than many traditional leather collars.

There are also decorative Mini designs such as Mini Sunrise and Mini Nesthäkchen. They combine Maul’s traditional leather craftsmanship with finer widths, shorter lengths and fittings suited to smaller proportions.

Do not choose a size based solely on the dog’s breed or weight. Even small dogs of the same breed can have different neck measurements, head shapes and amounts of coat.

How to choose the right size

A leather collar needs to be the right length and width to fit comfortably and securely. Use a soft tape measure and measure your dog’s neck where the collar will normally sit.

The tape should lie close to the neck without being pulled tight or hanging loosely. Then compare the dog’s actual neck measurement with the adjustment range in the size guide on the relevant product page.

Before ordering, check:

  • the dog’s neck measurement where the collar will sit,
  • the collar’s stated adjustment range,
  • the collar’s width and proportions,
  • that the buckle and fittings are suitable for the dog’s size,
  • that the collar cannot be pulled over the dog’s head,
  • that the selected design is suitable for its intended use.

Sizes and adjustment ranges vary between designs. Always refer to the size guide on the individual product page, even if your dog has previously worn another collar by Maul.

How should a leather collar fit?

A correctly fitted collar should sit securely around the dog’s neck without pressing or chafing. There should be enough room for a comfortable fit, but not so much that the dog can back out of the collar.

Check the fit while the dog is standing, walking, lowering its head and turning. The buckle and D-ring should not sit where they press against the dog’s throat, jaw or shoulders.

Check the fit regularly. The neck measurement can change as the dog grows, gains or loses weight, or develops more or less coat at different times of the year.

Which collar width is right for your dog?

The width of the collar should be proportionate to the dog’s neck and overall size. A very wide, substantial collar can feel bulky on a small dog, while a collar that is too narrow may be unsuitable for a larger or stronger dog.

A wider collar provides a larger contact area against the neck. This can be beneficial for some dogs, but the width must not restrict movement or press against the jaw and shoulders.

If your dog pulls strongly or has problems affecting the neck, throat or airways, a well-fitted harness may be a more suitable option for walks. Consult a vet if your dog has a medical condition.

Pair the collar with a leather lead

A classic leather collar can be paired with a matching lead by Maul to create a coordinated set. Choose the same leather colour and metal finish for a cohesive look, or combine different shades for a more individual style.

Make sure the lead’s snap hook is proportionate to the dog and fits the collar’s D-ring. An overly heavy snap hook can feel unbalanced on a small or very lightweight collar.

How to care for Maul leather collars

Wipe away surface dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid strong cleaning products, vigorous scrubbing and prolonged soaking, as these can affect the leather’s surface, colour and shape.

Maul recommends applying a grease-free leather-care product sparingly with a soft cloth. Avoid leather grease, shoe polish and products containing oils unless they are expressly recommended for the particular design.

If the collar becomes wet, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature. Do not place it directly on a radiator or use a hairdryer, as intense heat can dry out and alter the leather.

Check the collar regularly

Inspect the collar before use and make sure that the leather, lining, stitching, buckle, D-ring and decorative details are intact.

Do not use the collar if:

  • the leather has developed deep cracks or visible damage,
  • the stitching has started to come loose,
  • the buckle no longer closes properly,
  • the D-ring or other fittings are bent or damaged,
  • the lining has developed sharp or worn edges,
  • studs or other decorative details have come loose.
