Harnesses for Yorkshire Terriers

A small harness should fit your dog's body, adjust easily and stay securely in place during walks. Learn how to measure your Yorkshire Terrier and check the straps and buckles, including on a long coat.

Petit Soft Brown dog harness from Don Lorino

Start with your dog's measurements

Can a Yorkshire Terrier use Petit?

Petit can be a good starting point for a Yorkshire Terrier with smaller measurements: the harness has 1.2 cm-wide straps and is designed for small dogs. Breed does not determine size, though. Both neck and chest measurements must fall within the specific model's range.

Don Lorino's overview gives a Petit chest range of 24–40 cm. The minimum neck adjustment can vary between models. Compare Click XS–S if your dog needs larger measurements or you prefer wider straps. See the full measuring guide for both measurements and more sizes.

Three steps before buying

Measure and choose without guessing

01 · MEASURE

Neck and chest

Measure where the harness's neck section will sit and around the widest part of the chest, usually just behind the front legs. Keep the tape close to the body without pulling it tight. Measure again in the same places if the result varies.

02 · COMPARE

Petit or Click

Petit has narrower straps and one size. Click XS–S has wider straps and covers approximately 28–43 cm around the neck and 35–51 cm around the chest. Always compare with your chosen product's chart.

03 · TRY ON

Secure during movement

The harness should lie flat without twisting or rubbing under the front legs. Check that your dog can stand, walk and turn without rubbing from the straps or being able to back out of the harness.

For long coats

Check the coat around the straps

When putting the harness on, check that the coat is not trapped in the quick-release buckle or compressed under a strap. Feel along the strap edges, especially behind the front legs. Adjust for your dog's body and current coat rather than judging how the harness looks on top of the coat.

Take the harness off after a walk and check for pressure marks or rubbing. If it shifts, catches the coat or affects your dog's movement, try another adjustment or model. Texture is also a personal choice: Petit Soft has a velvet surface, while Petit Pop has corduroy. Both need to be tried on your dog.

CHECKLIST WHEN PUTTING IT ON

Make a quick check

  • Coat clear of buckles and adjustment fittings.
  • Straps lying flat against the body.
  • No strap moving up under the front legs.
  • Harness staying in place when your dog turns.
  • Your dog cannot back out of it.

Harnesses to compare

Compare measurements and fit first, then choose a colour and texture for everyday walks.

To match Soft Brown, explore the collar and lead. Choose a collar using the neck measurement; this does not tell you which harness size your dog needs.

Frequently asked questions

Harnesses for Yorkshire Terriers

Is Petit always right for a Yorkshire Terrier?

No. Your dog's neck and chest must fit within the chosen Petit model's range. Compare Click XS–S or another model if the measurements do not fit.

How do I measure a dog with a thick coat?

Keep a soft tape measure close to the body without pulling it tight, and measure twice. When trying the harness on, check that the coat is clear of the buckles and the straps lie flat.

Can I choose a harness by my dog's weight?

Weight does not tell you neck and chest circumference. Measure both and check that they fit within the same size on the current product page.

Which lead goes with a Petit harness?

Petit leads have smaller straps and hardware designed for the collection. Choose a lead according to your dog's size, needs and walking habits. Read the guide to leads for small dogs.
