How to choose the right collar for your dachshund
A dachshund's long back and short legs make fit and proportions important when choosing equipment. The Tax collars from Maul Ledermanufaktur come in several neck sizes – compare the models here and choose by your dog's measurements.
Three things decide the fit
Measure where the collar will sit and compare your dog's measurement with the range for suitable neck circumference – not just with the collar's total length.
If your dog pulls a lot, a well-fitting harness can spread the force across the chest instead of letting all the pull rest on the neck.
Nylon-reinforced, hand-riveted leather stands up to a curious, active dachshund in everyday life.
What should you consider for a dachshund?
Dachshunds vary in size and proportions. A collar should therefore be chosen based on your dog's measured neck circumference, the width of the collar and how your dog moves on the lead. Compare the measurements of the two Maul models before you order.
The right neck circumference
Both collar models come in total lengths of 35, 40 and 45 cm. The size name is not your dog's neck circumference – check the suitable neck measurement in the table.
Lined against the skin
Both models have soft nappa leather on the inside. Still check the fit regularly so that the collar doesn't press or rub.

Measure your dog while it stands calmly and use a soft tape measure. If the measurement is close to the boundary between two sizes, compare the adjustment range on the product page and feel free to contact us before ordering.
Place the tape measure just below the ear, where the collar will sit.
Two fingers of space is a first check when the collar is on your dog. Measure the neck circumference without pulling tight and compare with the product's stated range.
Choose the size whose range best matches your measurement.
The collar should sit securely without pressing or rubbing on your dog's neck.
| Total length | Neck circumference | Width |
|---|---|---|
| 35 cm | 24–29 cm | Tax: 2.4 cm Premium Tax: 1.8 cm |
| 40 cm | 29–34 cm | 2.4 cm |
| 45 cm | 34–39 cm | 2.4 cm |

Collar or harness for a dachshund?
Choose based on how your dog walks on the lead and how the equipment sits on the body. Collar size is determined by neck circumference; for a harness, you need to check both neck and chest.
For everyday walks and when you want an ID tag in place, a collar works well.
A well-fitting harness lets you attach the lead to the harness instead of the collar. Check that the harness sits securely and gives your dog room to move. Measure neck and chest and compare harness sizes →
Caring for your leather collar
The collar is worn close to your dog's skin and is exposed to movement, moisture and everyday wear. Follow the care advice for the type of leather and it will last longer.
Regularly check that the metal parts are intact and properly closed.
Use methods and products intended for nappa/full-grain leather.
Avoid direct heat, which can dry out and damage the leather.
Some colour variation over time is part of the character of genuine leather.

About dachshund collars
Should my dachshund wear a collar or a harness?
Both can work depending on the dog. A well-fitting collar can be used on calm walks and for the ID tag. If your dog pulls a lot, a well-fitting harness can spread the pull across the chest. If your dog has back or neck problems, consult a vet.
What size fits my dachshund?
Measure your dog's neck where the collar will sit. Both Tax and Premium Tax come in total lengths of 35, 40 and 45 cm, fitting neck circumferences of 24–29, 29–34 and 34–39 cm respectively. Choose by neck measurement, not by breed name.
Are leather collars good for dachshunds?
Yes, provided they are lined and don't rub. Both Tax and Premium Tax are lined with soft nappa leather to protect the coat.
What's the difference between Tax and Premium Tax?
Tax is double-folded nappa leather throughout. Premium Tax has full-grain leather on the outside and nappa leather on the inside, which gives a slightly more robust surface.
Can I exchange the size after purchase?
Please read our current return and exchange terms before you order. If you're unsure about the size, you can contact us with your dog's neck measurement and a link to the product.
What does shipping cost?
See our shipping and delivery terms for up-to-date information. Shipping options and any cost are shown at checkout for your order.
Is this Don Lorino's own brand?
