Finding a good collar when your dog is a puppy is important for several reasons. A collar that is too heavy or large can make it uncomfortable for your puppy to move and play. In addition, the puppy will grow quickly in the first months, so the collar needs to be adjustable in size.

Here are the most important things to consider when choosing a collar for your puppy:

  • Weight
A collar that weighs too much will burden the puppy and make it difficult to play and run freely. Aim for super lightweight materials and avoid anything bulky or in heavier materials like leather. The lightest collars in nylon or suede only weigh 15-25 grams, which is a good weight level.
  • Size
Adjust the size of the collar according to the puppy's current size, not according to the expected full-grown size. A collar that is too large can catch or rub. It should fit snug but not too tight and with the option to adjust the size as the puppy grows.
  • Material
The material should be durable but also soft and flexible for maximum comfort. Suede is a good choice that is both durable and comfortable. Avoid rough or hard materials that risk chafing.
  • Adjustable
Make sure that the collar can be adjusted in size, either by having many holes for the buckle or by means of a velcro closure. So you can easily switch to a new size as the puppy grows.

A good choice for puppies and small dog breeds is the Petit series from Don Lorino. Our lightest Petit collars weigh only 17 grams and are very narrow at 1.2 cm. It is made of soft and flexible material and can be adjusted in size with the smart solution.
