An extra way to keep track

AirTag holders for dog collars

Attach an Apple AirTag close to your dog's collar with a soft silicone holder. An AirTag can help you see a reported location in Apple's Find My network, but it is not a GPS tracker and does not provide a guaranteed real-time position.

AirTag in brief

01 Not a GPS tracker

AirTag uses Bluetooth and Apple's Find My network, not its own mobile or GPS connection.

02 The location may be delayed

A new position requires the AirTag to be detected by a compatible device nearby.

03 A complement

AirTag doesn't replace microchipping, registration, an ID tag, a secure leash or supervision.

How an AirTag's location is reported

An AirTag sends out a Bluetooth signal. Compatible Apple devices in the Find My network can detect the signal and anonymously relay the AirTag's location to iCloud.

The owner can then see the reported location in the Find My app. How current the position is depends, among other things, on whether there is a compatible device near the AirTag.

1
The AirTag sends a Bluetooth signal

AirTag has no mobile connection of its own that sends a continuous GPS position.

2
A device in the Find My network detects the signal

This could be, for example, a compatible iPhone, iPad or Mac nearby.

3
The location is shown in the Find My app

You see the last reported location and when the information was updated.

In an area with few devices in the Find My network, updates may be delayed or not happen at all. AirTag is therefore not an alternative to a dedicated GPS tracker if you need continuous location data.
The right expectations lead to better use

What AirTag can and can't do

AirTag can give extra information about a reported location, but the technology shouldn't be described as a complete tracking solution for dogs.

AirTag can

✓ Show the last reported location in the Find My app.
✓ Play a sound when the AirTag is within range.
✓ Help with Precision Finding on compatible Apple devices.
✓ Be put in Lost Mode and reported by the Find My network.

AirTag can't

× Guarantee a continuous real-time position.
× Report a new location without a compatible device nearby.
× Replace your dog's microchip and registration.
× Replace supervision, a secure leash or a dedicated GPS tracker.

Check the fit before use

How to fit the holder

The AirTag and holder should sit snugly without pressing against your dog's neck, interfering with the buckle or blocking the leash attachment.

01 Take off the collar

Never fit the holder while the collar is on your dog.

02 Thread the strap through

Pass the collar strap through both side openings of the holder.

03 Insert the AirTag

Place the AirTag in the silicone holder and check that it is properly enclosed.

04 Check on your dog

Make sure the holder doesn't press, twist the collar or interfere with your dog's movement.

Use with care

Check the holder regularly

An extra product on the collar affects weight, volume and fit. The holder therefore needs to suit the individual dog.

✓
Check that the holder stays in place

Check the silicone and the AirTag's position before your walk.

✓
Look for damage and chew marks

Don't use the holder if the silicone has cracked or been damaged.

✓
Keep the AirTag and battery away from the mouth

AirTag contains a coin cell battery. Don't let your dog chew the device or the holder.

✓
Check the battery status

Replace the battery when your Apple device tells you the battery level is low.

✓
Keep the microchip and ID tag

AirTag should be used as a complement to your dog's regular identification.

FAQ

About AirTag for dogs

Can you use an AirTag on a dog collar?

An AirTag can be attached to a dog collar with a suitable holder. However, AirTag is designed for finding items and is not a dedicated GPS tracker for animals.

Does AirTag show my dog's position in real time?

No. AirTag has no mobile or GPS connection of its own. The reported location is updated when the AirTag is detected by a compatible device in Apple's Find My network.

Does AirTag work if there's no iPhone nearby?

The AirTag can keep sending its Bluetooth signal, but a new location can't be relayed to the Find My network until a compatible device detects it.

Which collars fit Don Lorino's AirTag holder?

The holder is developed for Don Lorino's Petit and Click collars with a strap width of 12 to 25 mm. Always check the measurements before buying.

Is an Apple AirTag included with the holder?

No. Don Lorino's product is a silicone holder. Apple AirTag is sold separately.

How do I change the battery in an AirTag?

Take the AirTag out of the silicone holder and follow Apple's instructions for changing the battery. AirTag uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery.

Does AirTag replace my dog's microchip and ID tag?

No. Your dog should still be microchipped and correctly registered. An ID tag also makes your contact details immediately available to a finder.

Is AirTag waterproof?

Apple states that AirTag is splash, water and dust resistant to IP67 under controlled conditions. The resistance is not permanent and may decrease as a result of normal wear.

Find an AirTag holder that matches

Choose a silicone holder for dog collars between 12 and 25 mm. Remember that AirTag is a complement and doesn't replace your dog's microchip, ID tag or safety on walks.
